“In the Earth Sciences, I’ve never really felt gender to be a noticeable thing. The classes are really balanced, and I’ve never been the only girl in class. In terms of teaching staff, I’ve had a couple of female lecturers in the Earth Sciences, but I suppose there hasn’t been a huge amount of lecturing staff who are female.”
“I found my first Physics course pretty intimidating from a gender perspective. Walking into the first class, there was maybe 80 people and it was very, very male…15 women tops. Most of the tables were only male. It was a pretty aggressive culture. In a fun way once you get into it, but at first quite intimidating. It was very sassy, cocky, in the way people expressed themselves, and I noticed some of the girls shying away from that a little bit. The girls would definitely try to return it, but there was a few individuals who would set the tone, and they were always male."
