Working for a better tomorrow, today

Sasha Lee (Undergraduate)
"I take biology, chemistry and maths. I see very clearly a strong divide between biology/chemistry and maths. Maths feels significantly male dominated. Of the six lecturers I have had in total so far, two have been female. The fact that I consider this ‘pretty good’ says something about the male dominated environment. I do find this a shame, and wish it was different. On the other hand, I feel almost the opposite is true for biology and chemistry. The cohorts feel balanced (in fact probably comprise more girls), and I have never felt in any way ‘lesser’ because of my gender. This being said, it is still quite clear that the majority of lecturers are male. However, the younger generation of teachers (i.e. lab demonstrators, tutors) are a balanced gender mix. So, in biology/chemistry, despite a sense that ‘the big guys at the top’ are indeed currently guys, I have a realistic hope that this will not be the case in 20 years’ time. "

"Overall, I definitely do not dwell upon thoughts about gender inequality at ANU. Doing biology and chemistry, I guess I have it lucky. From time to time, however, I do feel sorry for those maths/engineering/computer science girls battling their way through their degrees. Then again, they may not be battling at all – I don’t know. But if I was one of them, I think I would be having a harder time."
